FRANK TURNER & THE SLEEPING SOULS and TRIBES JOIN PUKKELPOP LINE UP
Frank Turner? Tribes? Never heard of them! How many times do Pukkelpop fans go home after the festival feeling pretty chuffed they have discovered one amazing new band? Well, this year there could be two of these bands!
Frank Turner could easily be called the Billy Bragg of his generation. For years now, this 30-year-old Brit has been moving in punk circles, armed only with an acoustic guitar and singing heart-wrenching folk songs full of political statements. His message is not one of radical anarchy, but of pure love. He has played support for Flogging Molly, The Gaslight Anthem and – yes! – he was Green Day’s opening act during their American stadium tour. Faut le faire! The British punk bard is bringing along his band, The Sleeping Souls, to Pukkelpop.
Tribes are a new band from London. According to the leading British magazine NME, they fill the void between Pavement and The Courteeners entirely on their own. It’s all a bit confusing, the NME editor said, but “it does the business. All that fizzy, fuzzy disjointed warmth, but with really simple, clean pop songwriting and an oiky twang to boot.” All the songs we have been able to listen to have pleased us so much that we thought it would be unfair to deny you the presence of these young British dogs at Pukkelpop. This is exactly what the Pixies thought when they invited Tribes to be their opening act not so very long ago. It was the only sixth show the Londoners had ever played!
