Sweden Rock Festival 2012IN SOLITUDE, STEVE RODGERS AND GODA GRANNAR TO SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL 2012

British-influences 80s’ metal lives and thrives in Sweden. One of the hottest, if not the hottest, bands of this type is In Solitude. In their case, the term ”British-influenced” comes with a sidenote, since Danes Mercyful Fate have been at least as crucial in shaping the band’s sound as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. In other words, the albums ”In Solitude” (2008) and ”The world. The flesh. The devil” (2011) provide dark, ominous and diabolical sounds, of a calibre that have got the entire underground scene jumping with joy. If you’re a fan of heavy metal in the truest sense of the word, don’t miss In Solitude. Especially if you also happen to regard the return of King Diamond as this year’s most essential SRF-event.

If you’re wondering: yes, Steve Rodgers is the son of the legendary Paul Rodgers, who will also appear at this year’s SRF with Bad Company. Rodgers Jr is apparently a chip off the old block, since he clearly has more to be proud of than just his lineage. Steve has written songs since his childhood days and released two albums with the band Boa. Now he has started a solo career with a self-financed EP, pending its official release. The acoustic sound, ripe with philosophy and a certain degree of sentimentality, has been compared to Jeff Buckley and – naturally – Paul Rodgers. Perfect for a relaxing break from the rougher and tougher artists, especially with a cold drink or two.

Legendaryat Sweden Rock – Goda Grannar (The Good Neighbours) will once again give the audience at the festival a show to remember, of course dressed in weird hats!

Sweden Rock Festival 2012Dark Funeral at Sweden Rock 2012DARK FUNERAL CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK 2012

Dark Funeral is one of the perennial names in Nordic black metal-history. Their first album appeared in 1996 and their possibly most lauded one, mega-classic “Diabolis interium”, in 2001. “Attera totus sanctus” charted in Sweden while “Angelo exuro pro eternus” (2009) added a new, more technical flavor to the band’s spectrum.

Dark Funeral performed all these feats while simultaneously remaining ever loyal to traditional black metal. Their lineup, however, has fluctuated and a new incarnation of Dark Funeral emerged as recently as last year. This lineup, consisting of Lord Ahriman (guitar), Chaq Mol (guitar), Dominator (drums) and newcomers Nachtgarm (vocals) and Zornheym (bass), has already proven itself as a force to be reckoned with, marking the beginning of a new and exciting era in Dark Funeral’s history.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012Sweden Rock posterCRUCIFIED BARBARA, BOURBON BOYS & ÄNGLAGÅRD JOIN SWEDEN ROCK LINE UP

Crucified Barbara’s debut album ”In distortion we trust” arrived in 2005. The single ”Losing the game” charted in Sweden and ever since, the Stockholm quartet have more or less been on a roll. Their blend of hard rock, glam rock and punk was successful even in the Swedish semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest, where Crucified Barbara participated with the song ”Heaven and hell” in 2010, the year after their sophomore album ”’Til death do us party”. First and foremost, they are a live act. Among other things, they have tours with Motörhead and Europe plus appearances at Wacken Open Air and – obviously – SRF under their belts. On May 28th, their anticipated third album ”The midnight chase” will be released, appropriately just a couple of weeks before their equally anticipated return to SRF.

Join Pär Hulkoff, Matt Buffalo and Jonas Kjellgren together – which band do you get? Obviously Raubtier, but add to that Kenneth Seil from Kjellgren’s own band Scar Symmetry and you get the Bourbon Boys. Then, instead of industrial metal with Swedish lyrics you get roughneck country with a rockabilly groove and English lyrics. The Bourbon Boys have been known in the underground scene for years and their first album will finally appear later this year. Their first single ”Hillbilly heart” was released in February, and the Bourbon Boys’ SRF-debut marks their official step out of the underground.

Originally, Änglagård (roughly ”Angel Manor” in Swedish) were only active between 1991-94 and released two albums. These were tough times for traditional prog rock, to put it mildly. Few could guess that Änglagård’s debut album ”Hybris” (”hubris”; 1992) in particular would become the template for a whole new generation of Swedish prog rock. The Änglagård sound derives from such influences as King Crimson – the characteristic mellotron in particular – Genesis and fellow Swedes Trettioåriga Kriget. Add to that a hint of folk music and Anna Holmgren’s flute playing as the icing on the cake. The band was hailed as geniuses by prog fans in Sweden and abroad, and this year will finally see the arrival of the highly anticipated third Änglagård album. In addition, you’ll get to see one of Sweden’s most influential progressive bands ever live at SRF.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012Entombed at Sweden Rock 2012ENTOMBED ARE COMING TO SWEDEN ROCK 2012!

In the early 90s, death metal was literally the new black. Stockholm was a major epicenter of the genre, and one of the bands deemed synonymous with the famous Stockholm sound was Entombed.

The quintet, risen from the ashes of the cult band Nihilist, made two of the most influential death metal releases of all time with “Left hand path” (1990) and “Clandestine” (1991). Their third album “Wolverine blues” (1993) also became historical, spearheading a new sound now known as death’n’roll. Further along the road, Entombed returned to a sound more reminiscent of their original style with, among others, “Morning star” (2001) and “Serpent saints” (2007).

Core members LG Petrov (vocals) and Alex Hellid (guitar) are these days reinforced by Nico Elgstrand (guitar), Victor Brandt (bass, ex-Satyricon) and Olle Dahlstedt (drums, ex-Misery Loves Co) and the band is still as intense on stage as ever before.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012BRAZILIAN METALLERS SEPULTURA JOIN SRF LINE UP!

Sepultura at Sweden Rock Festival 2012In the early 80s, most Europeans would have scoffed at the idea of a Brazilian metal band. This changed in 1989, when Sepultura released “Beneath the remains” which became an instant thrash metal-classic. The band that formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984 got their international break with this album, their third. The subsequent releases “Arise” (1991), “Chaos AD” (1993) and “Roots” (1996) were even more successful.

Then frontman Max Cavalera jumped ship to form Soulfly. Undaunted, Sepultura soldiered on with American frontman Derrick Green, with whom they have so far released another six albums. The most recent one, “Kairos” (2011), is also one of the most appreciated ones, having much in common with the band’s earliest works: the music is brutal and primitive, but still very well played. Sepultura have indeed timed their return to SRF well.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012CANADIAN BAND EXCITER CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK

“Schmier of Destruction told us ‘without Exciter there would not have been any thrash metal, you guys made that genre happen'”, said Exciter-guitarist John Ricci in an interview in Sweden Rock Magazine #72. Canadians Exciter were one of the very first bands whose music would be labeled thrash or speed metal, and their first three albums “Heavy metal maniac” (1983), “Violence and force” (1984) and “Long live the loud” (1985) are favourites among most whom like their metal raw and energetic.

Internal strife made founder and guitarist John Ricci jump ship in 1985, which spelt the beginning of the end for Exciter. After several attempts to revive the band, John himself finally got Exciter back on track in 1996. The headbanging community reacted enthusiastically, and the band has so far released five albums since then, most recently “Death machine” in 2010.

Musically, Exciter remain faithful to the raw, primitive sound that made them famous. Now, for the very first time, they take their intense liveshow to Sweden Rock Festival.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012H.E.A.T WITH NEW SINGER CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK!

H.E.A.T at Sweden Rock 2012The sixtet from Upplands Väsby – the same place where the band Europe was born – were heralded as the first heroes of a new generation of hard radio rock when the debut “Heat” arrived in 2008. The following year they got their big national break in the Swedish trial competition for the Eurovision song contest, performing “1000 miles”.

The year after that… saw the departure of singer Kenny Leckremo following the band’s sophomore release “Freedom rock”. Undeterred, the band recruited new vocalist Erik Grönwall, famous from the Swedish “Idol” tv show but also boasting a genuine hard rock pedigree. Heat’s new album “Address the nation” displays a band reborn. The trademark catchiness is intact, while the music is overall more eclectic – and with a somewhat harder edge. Fans of the band’s own heroes, Giant, will surely know and love this new sound.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012THE LEGENDARY 10CC CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL 2012!

10CC at Sweden Rock Festival 201210cc from Stockport, UK formed in 1972, originally as a quartet of multi-instrumentalists and songwriters. Singer/bassist Graham Gouldman had previously delivered hits for the Yardbirds, the Hollies and Herman’s Hermits. 10cc became famous for their duality: on the one hand their artistic side, on the other a more casual one spawning an array of hits like “Donna”, “Rubber bullets” and “I’m not in love”. In short a recipe for success along the lines of Queen, ELO and Roxy Music.

Success started to wane following the original lineup’s demise in 1976, and the band folded completely in 1983. However, its former members kept having success elsewhere and 1991 saw the return of 10cc. In 2012, Graham Gouldman and cohorts make their SRF debut – not one year too soon.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012TWISTED SISTER TO PLAY ONLY SCANDINAVIAN SHOW OF 2012 AT SWEDEN ROCK

Few bands have left such deep an imprint in the Swedish psyche as Twisted Sister. The band’s third album ”Stay hungry” (1984) sold over 100 000 copies in Sweden alone, and the band signed autographs even to Björn Borg and the Swedish royal family.

Twisted Sister at Sweden Rock Festival 2012The Swedes simply adored Twisted Sister’s combination of raw, glam-tinted hard rock, rebellious lyrics and humorous promo videos. This love way outlived the band’s dissolution in 1987 – in fact, the overwhelming response to vocalist Dee Snider as a solo artist played a major part in Twisted Sister’s subsequent reunion. The love affair between the band and Sweden has simply continued, and now Twisted Sister once more return to SRF.

Not only is this their only Scandinavian concert this summer, it will also be their first concert in Sweden without their trademark makeup and stagewear. Guitarists Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda, bassist Mark Mendoza, drummer AJ Pero and inimitable singer Dee Snider will now demonstrate to their loyal Swedish fans that they rock just as hard ”au naturel”. Other than that, things are what you’re used to: prepare for such immortal classics as ”I wanna rock”, ”We’re not gonna take it”, ”Under the blade” and ”You can’t stop rock’n’roll”, delivered by one hell of a live act!

Sweden Rock Festival 2012SLAUGHTER ARE COMING TO SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL 2012!

Slaughter 2012Slaughter emerged from Vinnie Vincent Invasion, led by former Kiss guitarist Vinnie Vincent. Singer/guitarist Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum took over that band’s record deal with their own band Slaughter. They in turn became one of the biggest so called hair metal acts of the era.

The albums “Stick it to ya” (1990) and “Wild life” (1992) were huge sellers, producing a myriad of hits like “Up all night”, “Fly to the angels”, “The wild life” and “Real love”. Then Slaughter, like so many of their peers, were dropped when the record business decided to jump on the alternative bandwagon.

However, the band remained faithful to melodic hard rock, earning tremendous respect from generations of enthusiasts in the process. So it’s no exaggeration that Slaughter’s SRF debut has been very eagerly anticipated.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012NIGHT RANGER CONFIRM ONLY SCANDINAVIAN SHOW AT SWEDEN ROCK 2012

Night Ranger 2012The missing link between Billy Joel and Van Halen. This actually is not a bad description of Night Ranger, one of the biggest AOR-bands of the 80s. Particularly their first three albums – “Dawn patrol” (1982), “Midnight madness” (1984) and “Seven wishes” (1985) – are Classics with a capital C, stuffed with such hits as “Don’t tell me you love me”, “Sentimental Street” and “Sister Christian”.

The latter ballad is probably Night Ranger’s most famous song, though all in all the band became known for a tougher, more guitar-dominated sound than most of their peers’. The members are also very skillful and in demand as musicians – for instance, singer/bassist Jack Blades has also played with Damn Yankees, and guitarist Brad Gillis with Ozzy Osbourne and Vicious Rumors. Like most AOR bands Night Ranger suffered in the 90s.

In recent years, however, their career is happily back on track, and their most recent album “Somewhere in California” (2011) is a great show of strength. Night Ranger have certainly picked a good year for that SRF debut that so many of you have been waiting for.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012NORWEGIAN HAIR METAL BAND RETURN COMING TO SWEDEN ROCK 2012

Not all the greatest of Scandinavian hair metal heroes are Swedish. Norwegians Return released five studio albums in 1987-92, established themselves as one of the genre’s seminal acts and reached an unbelievable level of popularity on their home turf.

Their most famous trait was their skill in writing ballads – “Sing me a song”, “Bye bye Johnny”, “Five minutes” and “Life must go on” are just a few of the most classic examples. In 1993, Return decided to fold at the top of their game. However, the new millennium saw them return due to overwhelming fan demand. This marks their very first performance at SRF.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012ADRENALINE MOB TO SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL 2012!

Adrenaline Mob 2012
The name Adrenaline Mob may be new, but the band’s members are certainly well known to Sweden Rock Festival veterans. Drummer Mike Portnoy used to be the arguably most famous member of Dream Theater. Singer Russell Allen is usually part of the second gang of titans in contemporary prog metal, Symphony X. Along with future guitar hero Mike Orlando and newcomer John Moyer (Disturbed) on bass they form Adrenaline Mob, whose debut ”Omertà” has just been released.

Fans of bands like Godsmack, Black Label Society, Disturbed and Pantera do not want to miss these guys – heavy, groove-based and modern American metal is Adrenaline Mob’s signature.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012UK’S LITTLE ANGELS REFORMED AND PLAYING SWEDEN ROCK 2012!

In the early 90s, Little Angels were definitely Great Britain’s most popular hair metal-band in their native country. Their music was Little Angels 2012well-played as well as cocky, and each of their three studio albums  – “Don’t prey for me” (1989), “Young gods” (1991) and “Jam” (1993) – are classics of the genre. Nevertheless the band decided to split up in 1994. In recent times, singer Toby Jepson in particular has gained attention as a member of Gun and Fastway, and by producing Saxon.

In 2008, the members of Little Angels met for the first time in years at their ex-drummer’s funeral. Even under such tragic circumstances they rekindled their former friendship, and now the band is finally back in business. SRF 2012 will be the very first performance by this cult-act on Swedish soil for over 20 years – truly something to look forward to for every hair metal fan.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012CANNIBAL CORPSE CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK 2012

The most extreme of the extreme, and still a commercial success.

In 2003, Cannibal Corpse from Buffalo became the first death metal-band whose combine record sales exceeded one million copies. Without ever compromising the concept that they have been known for since their 1990 debut “Eaten back to life”. That is pure, brutal and technical death metal featuring infernally growling vocals and lyrics that could serve as manuals for elaborate horror movie-murders. Their current studio album “Torture” is their twelfth, and just as brutal, musically and lyrically, as its predecessors.

Now the time has come for one of the world’s most legendary death metal-acts to debut at SRF, to the delight of all the genres aficionados. And also for those of you who always wondered what that insane band from the classic Jim Carrey movie “Ace Ventura: Pet detective” sounds like in real life.

Sweden Rock Festival 2012Paul Rodgers, Simon Kirke, Mick Ralphs: BAD COMPANY COMING TO SWEDEN ROCK!

The king is dead – long live the king! That is, another one of the biggest bands in hard blues rock rose from the ashes of the legendary Free in 1973. Free’s nucleus of Paul Rodgers (vocals) and Simon Kirke (drums) joined forces with Mick Ralph (guitar, ex-Mott The Hoople) and Boz Burrell (bass, ex-King Crimson) as Bad Company. Between 1974 and 1982, the band released six hugely successful albums packed with such hits as “Can’t get enough”, “Feel like makin’ love”, “Shooting star” and “Rock & roll fantasy”.

After this, Paul Rodgers left for family reasons. A brief reunion ending in 1999 was the last time that the original quartet played together. Since then, especially Paul Rodgers – one of the most lauded singers in rock history – has gained even greater recognition from his collaboration with Queen. Fan demand for more Bad Company has become greater as well. Now the time has come. Bad Company, featuring all living original members (Boz Burrell sadly passed away in 2006) are coming to Sölvesborg in 2012.

One of the most anticipated and unexpected Sweden Rock Festival-premieres is upon us in an exclusive show for Sweden!

Sweden Rock Festival 2012AXEL RUDI PELL CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK 2012!

German guitarist Axel Rudi Pell is one of our time’s most distinguished practitioners of classic, melodic hard rock in the spirit of Rainbow. He debuted as early as 1984 with the band Steeler, with whom he made four albums prior to leaving as a result of the band’s increasing poppiness.

Axel Rudi Pell 2012In 1989 he released his first solo album and this year sees the arrival of the fifteenth one, ”Circle of the oath”. Unlike many others having enjoyed this long a career, Axel’s popularity shows no sign of waning. On the contrary, his fanbase keeps increasing, not least in Sweden.

This makes his return to SRF a highly anticipated one, and his now classic band lineup is still intact: Axel himself, his Steeler colleague Volker Krawczak on bass, keyboard player Ferdy Doernberg (Rough Silk, Uli Jon Roth), drummer Mike Terrana (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, Rage) and of course singer Johnny Gioeli (Hardline).

Sweden Rock Festival 2012MICHAEL SCHENKER’S TEMPLE OF ROCK CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK

Michael Schenker was the first German hard rock superstar and remains one of the greatest guitar heroes of all time. In the 70s he released albums with the Scorpions and UFO, gaining world fame with the latter act. In 1980 he debuted with his own Michael Schenker Group, shortened MSG, fronted by singer Gary Barden. To date, MSG have released eleven studio albums, including several certified milestones in the history of melodic hard rock. This to no small extent thanks to the array of superb singers that Michael Schenker has gathered for his band over the years. Graham Bonnet (ex-Rainbow), Robin McAuley (ex-Survivor) and Kelly Keeling (ex-John Norum), to name but a few.

Now another legendary name has been added to the collection – on MSG’s return to SRF, they will have none other than Doogie White (ex-Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen) at the microphone. The guarantee of quality playing backing that voice is signed by three guys called Herman Rarebell (drums), Francis Bucholtz (bass) and Wayne Findlay (guitar/keyboard).

Sweden Rock Festival 2012IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK 2012

Nicke Andersson is a remarkable man. As the leader of Entombed he made Stockholm the global epicentre of death metal. As the leader of the Hellacopters, he spearheaded the renaissance of hard rock’n’roll.

With Imperial State Electric, he moves forward with the latter genre, albeit in a different form. Here the groove of rock’n’roll mates with strong pop melodies with delectably theatrical overtones, in the vein of Kiss, Alice Cooper and Cheap Trick. Since the release of the eponymous debut in 2010, Imperial State Electric has grown into more than a one-man project. The sophomore effort ”Pop war” is a bona fide band product and marks a great leap forward for Imperial State Electric. Energetic, fun, groove-oriented and made to be played live – this is what real rock’n’roll sounds like in 2012.
